the school's social, extracurricular, and career services activities
will be an important part of your educational experience. Find out
about the technology tools that facilitate different communities
on campus, allowing for communication, personal development, and
getting together (in person and virtually).
Accessing computer services
Q. What public access for computing is available to students? Examples include computing labs, cyber cafés, residence hall computers and wireless access.
A. Hofstra
University has 1,600 computer systems available to students in
labs and computer classrooms across campus. A wired-port
is provided for each residence hall occupant, and wireless access
is provided in reidence hall common areas and mall areas outside
the residence halls. Additionally, we have wireless access available
in the Student Center, Axinn and Law Libraries, the School of
Law, Hagedorn Hall (home of the School of Education and Allied
Human Services), and most common areas on campus. The Cyber Café
in Hagedorn Hall has both wireless and wired ports and kiosk computers.
Q. Does the campus provide institutional e-mail accounts for all students and use e-mail as an official medium of communication?
A. Yes, Hofstra
University has provided e-mail for all students for more than
11 years, and it is used for all official communications.
Q. Does the campus provide and support electronic space for personal student Web pages?
A. Yes, students are provided 100 MB of personal space and all or part of that can be used for personal Web pages.
Connecting with others
Q. Is contact information for students, faculty, and staff readily accessible electronically?
A. Contact
information for faculty and employees is available in the electronic
directory. Student information is not available online for
privacy protection reasons. Hofstra University does provide
a student e-mail locator service to let people contact students
without exposing the student's e-mail address or other personal
information. Faculty have access to student e-mail addresses for
those students enrolled in their courses.
Q. What social activities and services are available online?
A. Within the My.Hofstra.edu Portal, student clubs and other activities can have group areas to promote their campus activities and have discussions. General and targeted announcements are also available alerting students about activities on- and off-campus. The campus radio station, WRHU 88.7 FM, is also broadcast online.
Q. Are there Web sites for student organizations and clubs?
A. Yes, Hofstra University student organizations and clubs may have Web sites.
Q. Does the campus make available online discussion forums or bulletin boards for un-moderated use?
A. The groups function in the My.Hofstra.edu Portal provides for un-moderated discussions. Students must authenticate and supply their name and e-mail in order to post.
Q. What technology-supported career-planning services are available for students?
A. The Hofstra University Career Center provides several technology-supported services for both students and alumni/ae. The Hofstra Job Connection, provided by MonsterTrak, allows students to post their resumes for potential employers to view. University students may also participate in PrideRecruiting provided by erecruiting.com. The Career Center also provides annotated lists of job search and other career-oriented Web sites.
