Part of the TIAA-CREF Institute's "Advancing Higher Education" series, by Herman A. Berliner and Liora Pedhazur Schmelkin, Hofstra Senior Vice Provost for Academic Affairs and Dean of Graduate Studies.
The Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs, adviser to the President on academic affairs, is the chief academic officer of the University and is second in command to the President.
The Provost is responsible for overseeing the full range of administrative responsibilities for the smooth operation of the academic units of the University including all of the University's Schools and Colleges as well as the libraries of the University.
The Provost's Office also carries out academic policies of the faculty and President, and discharges such special duties as the President or faculty may appropriately direct. In addition, the Provost's Office has the major responsibility of taking the lead role in new academic initiatives including in recent years the establishment of the School of Communication and the Honors College.
Dr. Herman A. Berliner is Hofstra University's Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs. Dr. Berliner, who is also the Lawrence Herbert Distinguished Professor of Economics, is in his 20th year as Provost and his 39th year at Hofstra University.
