Congratulations on your decision to Study Abroad. Studying Abroad is a unique experience that will not only enrich and diversify your educational experience, it will prepare you for the practical experience you need to work in our expanding global economy. The following checklists, one each for Hofstra and non-Hofstra programs, will help you prepare for this exciting opportunity.
Study Abroad Checklist for Hofstra Study Abroad Programs
- Make an appointment with a Hofstra Study Abroad Advisor to further discuss your study abroad opportunities. If you are an international student or a permanent resident, we recommend that you meet with a Study Abroad Advisor to get more information about immigration issues.
- Meet with the program coordinator of the Study Abroad program in which you are interested. (For listing of all program coordinators, see the Study Abroad brochure.)
- Make an appointment with your academic advisor to determine if the respective credits fulfill the distribution requirements for your major.
- Make an appointment to see a Hofstra University financial aid representative to verify if any of your financial aid is transferable for your trip.
- If you are a Hofstra residential student, please go to the Office of Residential Life (244 Student Center) to fill out a Leave of Absence Card for study abroad.
- Apply for a passport at a local post office.
- The University requires all study abroad participants to purchase Accident & Sickness Insurance Plan. Enrollment instructions are available in a PDF download [6.5 kb].

Study Abroad Checklist for Non-Hofstra Abroad Programs
- The first step in studying abroad is to select a program that best suits your needs. (Where would you want to go? What would you want to study? Program length, etc.) Some useful resources in helping determine this would be found in the IIE Brochures and various pamphlets and handouts located in the International Students Office.
- Make an appointment with a Hofstra Study Abroad Advisor to further discuss your study abroad opportunities. If you are an international student or a permanent resident, we recommend that you meet with a Study Abroad Advisor to get more information about immigration issues.
- Meet with the program coordinator of the Study Abroad program in which you are interested. (For listing of all program coordinators, see the Study Abroad brochure.)
- Make an appointment with your academic advisor to determine if the respective credits fulfill the distribution requirements for your major, and to complete a Permission to Enroll Form. You may want to do this first to make sure that studying abroad is a viable academic option.
- Make an appointment to see a Hofstra University financial aid representative to verify if any of your financial aid is transferable for your trip.
- If you are a Hofstra residential student, please go to the Office of Residential Life (244 Student Center) to fill out a Leave of Absence Card for study abroad.
- Apply for a passport at a local post office.
- Study Abroad insurance is a vital necessity for all programs. It is mandatory that you contact the sponsor university to inquire about Study Abroad insurance.
