FAQ
Q. What is the first step I need to take if I am thinking about studying abroad?
A. The first step is to make an appointment with the Director of International Off-Campus Education by calling (516) 463-5822 or e-mailing.
Q. What countries can I travel to?
A. Hofstra has programs in many countries, which include the 20 countries found in this section of the Web site. If you choose to go to a country that a Hofstra program does not visit, you can research and apply to Study Abroad through another institution that offers a program in that particular country.
Q. Is financial aid available for Study Abroad?
A. If a Hofstra University program is chosen, federal financial aid is transferable. Some programs offer limited scholarships. If a Hofstra University program is not chosen, you need to make an appointment with a financial aid adviser. When you make the appointment, be sure to tell the adviser that you are interested in financial aid for Study Abroad.
Q. How soon should I apply?
A. If possible, you should give yourself a full year in advance of the semester you intend to study abroad to research how the study abroad coursework you propose might affect progress toward your Hofstra degree and to explore which sources of financial aid may or may not apply. To ensure that you meet study abroad program and Hofstra administrative deadlines, you must begin the formal application procedure no later than the beginning of the semester prior to the semester you propose study abroad. For example, deadlines for Spring semester study abroad are typically in early October.
Q. Approximately how much does it cost to Study Abroad?
A. The costs of the programs differ. If you enroll in a Hofstra program, you will be charged the same tuition rate as if you were taking a class at the University. For most programs you would also have to add the cost of airfare, room and board. It is much easier to determine approximate cost once you have selected a program.
Q. Will I be able to transfer my academic credit?
A. After selecting a program, you should make an appointment with your major adviser for academic counseling. In order to transfer credit from another university to Hofstra, you must complete a Permission to Enroll form. On this form, you must obtain approval from the dean in the school of your major and the chairperson of each department to which you are transferring credit. This ensures that your credits will transfer to Hofstra.
Q. Do I have to speak the language of the country I am visiting?
A. Many Study Abroad programs offer language study, while others do not. You should be realistic about your language ability. If you are not fluent in the language you wish to study, be prepared to encounter some difficulties. The faculty coordinator can offer guidance regarding the level of language ability necessary for each program.
