Students in this course read, study, discuss and write about contemporary British theater (British drama since World War II). Among the playwrights to be studied are Samuel Beckett, Noel Coward, Tom Stoppard, Harold Pinter, David Hare, Alan Ayckbourn, Peter Shaffer and Bernard Shaw. Since the course is taught in London, the class work is supplemented with five performances of contemporary plays and world theater classics (depending on what is being staged in London at the time). Additionally, the course includes tours of Shakespeare’s Globe and the Royal National Theatre. The course also introduces students to the city of London as the literary and dramatic capital of the English-speaking world. The British Library is used as a major resource for literary research.
