Hofstra in Spain Program
June 26 - July 28, 2013

Santiago de Compostela

Hofstra Summer Program in Spain is based in Santiago de Compostela, a city located in northwest Spain and declared a World Heritage City by UNESCO. Santiago is an exceptionally beautiful city and it has been attracting thousands of travelers each year since the Middle Ages because of the world-famous Christian pilgrimage route (El Camino de Santiago), and it remains a major international center of culture.

USC: The University of Santiago de Compostela
Classes are held at the University of Santiago de Compostela, which enjoys an outstanding tradition of learning. More than 35,000 students attend the university each year, making it a hub of higher education. With its ancient buildings, archives, libraries and courtyards, the campus is extremely attractive and is fully equipped with modern facilities and technologies. The university has an established system for hosting foreign students from around the world, and in addition to interactive courses in a pleasant classroom environment, it offers an exciting range of cultural events, historical tours, and recreational activities. Students will live in single rooms in one of the university's modern residence halls, and all meals will be provided.

Places We Go
While in Santiago, students participate in weekend excursions, planned and organized by the university of Santiago, including a trip to the Galician wine region Rías Baixas. Students also travel to the charming city of Oporto (in Portugal) for a weekend in mid-July, where they will explore the historic center (another UNESCO World Heritage Site), the port wine cellars in neighboring Gaia, and the surrounding beaches. At the end of July we spend several days in Spain's capital, Madrid, and experience the vibrant cultural life of this major European city. While in Madrid, there will be guided tours of the Prado Museum, the Modern Art Museum, the Royal Palance, as well as a flamenco show. All these events are included in the program fee.

This is your chance to make life-long friends, get to know European cities, hone your Spanish, and earn up to 6 credits!

The program is open to both Hofstra and non-Hofstra students, and a full range of Spanish language courses are offered. These courses, taught by expert professors from the University of Santiago, help fulfill university requirements. In addition, experienced Hofstra faculty teach a variety of undergraduate and graduate courses in Spanish literature and culture, a global studies course (taught in English), and a course in Spanish literature in English translation. The program may be of particular interest to majors and minors in Spanish, Global Studies, Latin American and Caribbean studies, and international business, as well as to graduate students in Spanish, but we welcome applications from all motivated and responsible students.   Interested students can attend informational meetings scheduled during the fall and spring semesters.
