Study for a month at the medieval University of Santiago de Compostela and travel to Madrid: a unique and transformational experience

The 2008 Hofstra Summer Program in Spain will be based in Santiago de Compostela, a UNESCO World Heritage City in the northwest of the country. Santiago is an exceptionally beautiful city; its medieval and Renaissance streets and architecture are enchanting. It has been attracting countless thousands of travelers each year since the Middle Ages because of the world-famous Christian pilgrimage route (El Camino de Santiago), and it remains a major international center of culture.

The University of Santiago de Compostela, where classes will be held, is over five hundred years old, and enjoys an outstanding tradition of learning. More than thirty-five thousand students attend the university each year, making it a hub of higher education. With its ancient buildings, archives, libraries and courtyards, the campus is extremely attractive; it is fully equipped with modern facilities and technologies. The university has an established system for hosting foreign students, featuring an exciting range of cultural events and historical tours, in addition to recreational activities. Students will live in one of the university's residence halls, where meals will be provided.

By taking part in the program you will also enjoy the opportunity to travel to Madrid, where high-quality accommodation will be included in the program fee. The program offers full tours of major cultural attractions, including the Prado Museum, the Reina Sofía Museum of Modern Art, and the Royal Palace. You will have the chance to experience the vibrant cultural scene that Madrid has to offer, since the program includes tickets to a theater production and a flamenco performance of exceptional quality.

The program is open, until places are filled, to both Hofstra and non-Hofstra students. We offer a full range of language courses that will help fulfill university requirements, from the introductory level upwards, taught by expert professors from the University of Santiago. In addition, we provide an exciting variety of courses in Spanish literature and language, and one specially designed English-language distribution course in History, all taught by experienced Hofstra faculty. The program may be of particular interest to majors and minors in Spanish, Latin American and Caribbean Studies and History, as well as to graduate students in Spanish, but we welcome applications from all motivated and responsible students and graduates from Hofstra and beyond.

Eligibility

Undergraduate and graduate students from Hofstra and other American universities are all invited to apply.

Housing

Students have the choice of living with a local family, enjoying full board and a single room, or in one of the university's comfortable and very stylish residence buildings.

Cost

The estimated program cost is $3,000. This fee covers most essential expenses: round-trip airfare, private transportation in Spain, a single room in a university residence hall in Santiago de Compostela, hotel in Madrid, tickets for cultural events, entrance fees for museums and palaces, excursions, and your medical insurance policy. Tuition costs for the classes you take are additional and are the same as for regular Hofstra University tuition and fees. Tuition fee is $4,833 for six credits.
