In a year in which Hofstra’s national – and international – reputation has increased, we recognize that it is the vision, dedication and scholarship of our faculty that are at the center of our success. In the past year, we have successfully hosted the third and final presidential debate,announced our plans to form the Hofstra University School of Medicine in partnership with North Shore-LIJ Health System, and furthered our commitment to diversity through a number of initiatives, such as the Person of Color Sculpture Competition and the inaugural Guru Nanak Interfaith Prize, which recognizes efforts as interfaith dialogue.

Critical to the success of all our major initiatives is the involvement of our faculty, who have played an integral role inHofstra’s transformation from a good regional college to a renowned national university.

In this issue of Hofstra Horizons are four examples of the breadth and excellence of our faculty’s scholarship. Professor ofLaw Julian Ku analyzes the interaction of international tribunals and U.S. courts, while Assistant Professor of Psychology OskarPineño looks at how experiments in the animal laboratory can help us understand maladaptive human behavior.

For an understanding of the current state of the media, BobPapper, professor and chair of the Department of Journalism,Media Studies and Public Relations, studies the metrics of viewership and media usage in the U.S. market, using theRTNDA/Hofstra University Annual Survey. And in an article that describes the issues of black students in majority minority suburbs, Dr. Marlene Munn-Joseph, assistant professor of curriculum and teaching, describes how she and her colleagues in the School of Education, Health and Human Services are working with real applications to enhance achievement in those schools.

These are but four scholarly articles by our faculty and, as always, they serve as examples of how our faculty use excellent scholarship to connect to the professions, the communities around us, and the greater world.
