From the President

Spring 2006

The faculty are the heart of the academic enterprise, and at Hofstra University, our faculty are leading scholars in their academic disciplines, and equally committed to their work in the classroom. Their commitment enriches the academic discourse and life of our University. This issue of Hofstra Horizons is yet another demonstration of the depth and breadth of scholarship in which our faculty engages.

In this issue, you'll be informed by Associate Professor of Latin American Literature Miguel-Angel Zapata’s analysis of Chilean poet Nicanor Parra’s chaotic, ironic poetry. Julie Heath, assistant professor of biology, probes the relationship between the complex parenting behavior of birds and changing environmental conditions. Corinne Kyriacou, assistant professor of health professions and family studies, builds a case for service credit banking programs to bridge gaps in the delivery of services to our elderly population. And Ahmet Karagozoglu, associate professor of finance, ponders the potential research opportunity that the Korean and Turkish markets may provide in analyzing organized financial derivatives exchanges.

The reputation of Hofstra University continues to rise nationwide, and it is due in large measure to the dual commitment our faculty make to their research and to classroom teaching. Students benefit enormously from the small classes in which these leading scholars teach and interact.

Our commitment as a university is to provide these scholars and their students with the technological and curricular resources they need to teach, research and learn. This year, for example, we will open a new building, which will house a black-box theater and music rehearsal space, as well as faculty offices for three academic departments. We are continuing to renovate classroom and academic spaces, providing our faculty and our students with state-of-the-art facilities.

I am very pleased to have the opportunity to provide a window into the work our faculty does, and to introduce you to examples of their scholarship. As always, I extend my congratulations and my gratitude to the contributors to Hofstra Horizons for sharing their knowledge.
