Spring 2007

At the center of academic life at a university is the scholarly work done by its faculty. As you will see in this issue of Hofstra Horizons, we at Hofstra University are fortunate to have faculty who are exceptional scholars in many areas, including such fields as sociology, science and psychology.

These scholars are also dedicated teachers and mentors who inject their scholarship into the classes they lead. The direct connections that students make with faculty create a close academic community at Hofstra.

The 2006-2007 academic year has been an exciting and productive year for our University. Important facilities, such as the main floor of the Axinn Library, have been renovated; interesting conferences on subjects as diverse as Primo Levi and women’s equal citizenship have been convened; and honored guests such as author Karenna Schiff Gore, poet Stephen Dunn, scientist Bruce Stillman, actresses Susan Sullivan and Talia Shire, and alumnus Phil Rosenthal have visited. Each and every event and improvement adds to our growing national reputation, and it is due to our partnership with faculty that life at Hofstra University is so vibrant.

As always, I am impressed by the thoughtful essays contained in Hofstra Horizons, and I am pleased to introduce you to these pieces.
