President's Column
Spring 2009
During this past academic year, Hofstra University has been fortunate to host a presidential debate, to move forward with a new School of Medicine in partnership with North Shore-LIJ Health System, and to create many new academic centers and programs. All of these initiatives are successful because of the dedication and innovation of our faculty. The success we have seen this past academic year is a continuation and expansion of a tradition of faculty excellence in both teaching and scholarship.
The articles you will read in this edition of Hofstra Horizons are no exception. Associate Professor of Psychology Vincent Brown and Associate Professor of Computer Science Simona Doboli partner in studying a model that examines brainstorming and creativity. Dr. Cynthia Bogard, director of the Center for Civic Engagement (CCE), illustrates the many ways that the CCE promotes democracy and civic engagement on our campus. Gerda Kamberova, associate professor and chair of the Department of Computer Science, explains the concept of computer vision and application, while Dr. Denny Taylor, professor and doctoral director of literacy studies, explains the mission of and need for the newly launched International Center for Everybody’s Child.
This group of articles illustrates what makes Hofstra and its faculty special, in that scholarship and practical application, thoughtful theory and dedicated action, come together to educate our students and make the world around us a better place.
Sincerely,
Stuart Rabinowitz
President
