This issue of Hofstra Horizons includes articles describing research by Hofstra faculty on key national issues, such as obesity and offshoring, and others that focus on subjects affecting Hofstra University and the region.

In his piece on offshoring, Shawn Thelen, assistant professor of marketing and international business, describes original research that sheds new light on the under-represented area of consumer sentiments toward offshore services. Katie Sell and Brian Clocksin, assistant professors of physical education and sport sciences, discuss efforts to develop programs that will combat the rising obesity rates among American children and adults, including one involving the Nintendo Wii sports program. And Daniel T. Sciarra, professor of counseling, research, special education and rehabilitation, describes his experiences as the first Hofstra professor to participate in Hofstra’s faculty exchange program with the historically black college/university Claflin University, an immersion experience he undertook to improve his understanding of multiculturalism.

In her article, Amy Masnick, assistant professor of psychology, explains how research conducted with colleagues at Carnegie Mellon University and Grand Valley State University has broadened our understanding of how children and adults learn and use data. And Beth Levinthal, director of the Hofstra University Museum, describes the recent transformation of the museum and explains what the museum’s new, broader mission means for Hofstra students, faculty, and staff, as well as the community. Collectively, these articles demonstrate our shared commitment to scholarship, education and community. In many areas of academic endeavor, Hofstra University scholars are making a significant contribution.
