Hofstra Humanities Faculty Capture 6 NEH Fellowships in Three Years
Only 3 Private Universities Compile Larger Totals

Congratulations to John L. Bryant (Professor, Department of English), Hofstra University's most recent recipient of a Research Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH).  This is the sixth NEH Research Fellowship award received by Hofstra faculty over the past three years.  Only three other private universities across the country - Notre Dame, Boston and Harvard - have exceeded that total!  Among public and private universities combined, Hofstra places 8th nationally. The Freeman Foundation (Stowe VT) has announced the approval of a $500,000 grant to Hofstra University to advance the University's undergraduate programs in Asian Studies.  Dr. Patricia Welch of the Department of Comparative Literature and Languages, who also serves as Director of the Asian Studies Program, assumed the leadership role in preparing this grant proposal last spring.  The Asian Studies Program is an interdisciplinary program designed to further understanding of the traditional and modern societies of Asia through teaching, research and service.  The grant will allow Dr. Welch and her colleagues to develop new courses and increase research opportunities for students and faculty alike.  The four-year project supported by this grant is designed to achieve one central goal:  to offer students, faculty and members of the community an opportunity to extend and deepen their understanding and appreciation of Asia.  Dr. Bernard J. Firestone, Dean of Hofstra College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, takes pride in pointing out that "Asian Studies is one of a number of interdisciplinary area studies programs in Hofstra College," noting that "Dr. Welch's successful initiative represents a major contribution to the future of Asian and GlobalStudies at Hofstra."

Events

The Office for Research and Sponsored Programs (ORSP) regularly presents a variety of workshops and guest speakers.  We will kick off Academic Year 2003-2004 with three introductory workshops tentatively scheduled for mid-October.  Each workshop is expected to last a little over an hour.  During these sessions we will describe how the Office for Research and Sponsored Programs can assist you in efforts to identify appropriate funding sources to suit your professional interests and goals.  In addition, we will offer some tips on how to prepare a complete and responsive proposal and we will advise participants about the University's local approval processes associated with the submission of grant proposals.  Invitations to participate in this workshop will be sent initially to all new faculty; remaining seats will be made available to other faculty and administrators.  For further information, contact Sofia Kakoulidis at extension 3-6810.

The ORSP workshop calendar for Fall 2003 will also include a workshop on the Preparation of Proposals to the Academic Research Enhancement Awards (AREA) Program of the National Institutes of Health.  For further information on this workshop, tentatively scheduled for early November, contact Sofia Kakoulidis at extension 3-6810.
