Community Outreach
In addition to fostering diversity on campus, Hofstra University offers a wide range of cultural and educational opportunities benefiting the surrounding communities.
- Uniondale Library's "Family Training" Workshop
The Library provides a six week program to community members, focusing on different areas of child development (from birth through age 5). Every year a clinical supervisor from the Saltzman Community Services Center and 2 or 3 graduate students from the graduate program in Speech-Language Pathology present a 90 minute program for parents/care givers on speech-language development. The goals of the presentation are to educate parents regarding normal development, to provide strategies for parents to use to facilitate language development in the home, and to provide resources for additional information on communication development. - Language-literacy support program at an area elementary school
Through the Department of Speech-Language-Hearing Sciences this project provides language-literacy support for kindergarteners at a local elementary school who are at high risk for developing language-literacy disorders. The instructional method uses an explicit, sequential approach to promote letter identification and phonological awareness. A response-to-intervention (RTI) approach is utilized to identify those individuals who may require further evaluation of language-literacy abilities. In addition, through Hofstra's chapter of NSSHLA (National Student Speech Language Hearing Association) undergraduate student volunteers have provided language enrichment activities to kindergarten classes. - Liberty Partnership Program
The School of Education, Health and Human Services in collaboration with the New York State Education Department, provides students (grades 9-12) with a broad range of services designed to increase motivation and ability to complete secondary school and seek entry into post-secondary education and/or meaningful employment. - Science and Technology Entry Program (STEP)
