This documentary reflects specifically on issues about images of Muslims and will heighten students’ awareness of hidden preconceptions. The initiative has the potential to become a vibrant example and inspiration for students to widen their horizons and learn about other cultures. “Crossing Borders” is a seventy minute documentary that follows four Moroccan and four American university students as they travel together through Morocco and, in the process of discovering "The Other," discover themselves. With group travels and frank discussions, the students confront the complex implications of the supposed "clash of civilizations" between Islam and the West. The relationships formed through shared experiences contrast sharply with the media-shaped views Americans and Muslims have of each other. Humor, honesty and a willingness to be challenged all bring individuals closer to each other and the relationships that develop disarm hidden stereotypes. Therefore, our goal to showing this film is to transform students to see the world from a different perspective and to realize their opportunities and responsibilities for global concerns. This could be a perfect opportunity for students and faculty in your class/department to attend this event. It is a free event with refreshments being served. |

Community and Educational policy activists would share insights into the ongoing attempts to achieve educational equity, as envisioned by Brown. Examples would be shared of those efforts and policies deemed both "successful "and" unsuccessful" to close longstanding achievement gaps based on racial, ethnic, income and geographical differences. Model programs such as the NOAH initiative would be explored in contrast to other preparatory and support projects in addressing whether the most important questions are being considered in relation to equity, and where educational policy can still be improved upon to address the growing educational crisis confronting the nation as a whole. “Get Out, Get Active, Catch the Spirit” VOICE stands for Vision of Integration, Choice, and Equality. VOICE is a work group formed by faculty in the Counseling, Research, Special Education, and Rehabilitation (CRSR) department in the School of Education, Health and Human Services at Hofstra University, along with community partners that support the mission of the group to raise awareness about disability and mental health issues. VOICE Day 2011 is an opportunity for the whole community--youth through seniors, with and without disabilities--to get together and get active! The exposition will include demonstrations by sports teams, opportunities to try sports and recreation activities, information about local programs, nutrition and fitness consultation, and much, much more. This exhibition commemorates the 35th anniversary of the Soweto Uprising – a series of clashes between black students protesting Apartheid policies and the South African authorities. Les Payne, a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, covered South Africa for Newsday and began collecting the featured artists’ works during this time. [more]

| November 12, 2010 | Hofstra University School of Education, Health and Human Services (SOEHHS) will host a symposium titled, 75 Years: The Transformation of Public Schools. This symposium will focus broadly on issues of educational change over the last 75 years, federal education policy (i.e. No Child Left Behind), and innovative trends in literacy and educational technology. More specifically, we will gain a historical overview of the field of educational psychology and its impact on educational technology, curriculum and instructional design. We will then explore the current and future impact of the No Child Left Behind Act and President Obama's change initiative, the Race to the Top program. The symposium will conclude with a look at how literacy has evolved and how games in education will play a significant role in the future of school and learning transformation.
