Welcome to Hofstra Summer Camps!

Your Child's Day
at Hofstra Specialty Camps

Camp runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

For each two-week session, your child chooses one specialty. Half of the day consists of the specialty of their choice; the other half of the day your child is placed in a recreation group where they participate in lunch, instructional swim and recreational sports.

The campers entering the 2nd through 5th grade have their specialty in the morning. The campers entering the 6th through 9th grade have their specialty in the afternoon.

Specialty Camps

Campers are evaluated on the first day of attendance and placed in appropriate groups. Highly trained and caring coaches and teachers, through individual and group instruction, promote academic advancement, talent enrichment and skills training. All of our Specialty Camps are co-ed. All campers in the same grade requesting Specialty Camps in the same session are automatically placed together.

Recreation

One half of your camper's day is in a recreation group. During this half of the day, your child participates in a period of instructional swim and a period of recreational sports. Each recreation group has 8 to 10 campers (same grade and gender), accompanied by our qualified recreation counselor. The counselor assigned to each recreation group remains with that group for the duration of camp. Each recreation group participates in scheduled team games such as baseball, soccer, deck hockey, volleyball, basketball or other major sports. All campers are given the opportunity to improve and develop their abilities in an enjoyable, nurturing environment. Our expert staff and the emphasis on individual achievement help contribute to improved athletic skills and greater self-esteem. You may request your child to be with a friend that is in the same grade on the registration form. We cannot guarantee a recreation group request after May 15th.

Instructional Swim (Part of Recreation)

In addition to the recreational sports, each camper enjoys a terrific swimming program for one period every day. Half of the time is devoted to a Red Cross instructional swim program; the rest of the time is fun time in the water. Hofstra's 50-meter, Olympic-sized indoor pool allows campers the opportunity to swim every day.

Club Recreation

In addition to the scheduled recreational period, campers entering 2nd through 5th grade participate in Club Recreation. Campers select their own activity each day and participate at their own pace. A variety of games and sports are offered: volleyball, football, kickball, relays and more. Campers may even choose to relax under a shady tree with friends, engage in a board game, sketch a drawing, jump rope, weave a lanyard or engage in any age-appropriate activity. This period belongs to the campers; it's their choice!

Special Event Days

Each session has one Special Event Day organized during recreation hours. Festivities in the past have included: carnivals, crazy water relays, DJ parties, concerts, Olympics and the popular Jet Fest. These days are the recreational highlight of each session.

New York State law requires that each parent be aware of the following:

  1. It is mandatory for all camps to receive an operating permit from the Department of Health each year.
  2. Camps are required to be inspected twice yearly.
  3. Inspection reports are filed at the Nassau County Department of Health at 240 Old Country Road, Mineola (Room 507).
  4. Inquiries can be made Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-4:45 p.m., at (516) 571-3680.

Hofstra Summer Camps' American Camping Association and Board of Health certifications are on display in the camp office.
