Learning Institute: Reading, Writing, and Learning Clinic

Session 1 - July 6 - 16Session 2 - July 19 - 30
Session 3 - August 2 - 13
The Literacy Summer Program at the Reading and Writing Learning Clinic provides students with the opportunity to participate in authentic reading and writing experiences, while enjoying all the recreational benefits of Hofstra’s Summer Camps. In this program, New York state-certified literacy specialists provide daily small-group instruction that focuses on helping learners develop their confidence as readers and writers in a supportive and engaging environment. Each session is carefully crafted to develop a set of flexible reading and writing strategies to use while reading or composing texts, and to help your child make the most efficient and effective use of these strategies. The program ensures that reading and writing remain fun and meaningful. Literacy Summer Program specialists work closely with your child to build on their strengths and support their literacy needs, so that they can successfully address the challenges of the New York State English Language Arts curriculum. When registering your child for Hofstra University’s Literacy Specialty Camp, an initial registration survey helps inform placement for your child in the appropriate small group based on your child’s literacy needs. Groups have no more than five students, which allows for appropriate and intensive individualized instruction in a relaxed and enjoyable small learning community. The Reading and Writing Learning Clinic will be held at the Hofstra Saltzman Community Services Center, South Campus.
There is a $40 surcharge per two-week session for additional materials and staff requirements.
Schedule:
Half the day consists of reading, writing and learning. For the other half of the day, your child is placed in a recreation group of 8-10 campers in of the same grade and gender where all campers enjoy lunch, instructional swim and recreational sports.
