In response to community needs, Hofstra embarked on a new program for children with autism. Called REACH, the program was developed in conjunction with specialists at The Joan and Arnold Saltzman Community Services Center. It is an exciting opportunity for these children with special needs. First, parents meet with the director to set parameters and goals for the child. Students are then encouraged to reach these pre-determined goals throughout the semester while working on social and communication skills. From 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. each Saturday, students will take part in an interactive workshop, a social skills workshop, and spend an hour and a half in one of many studio or performing art programs in Hofstra's Saturday Classes. New York State certified teachers who are specialists in the field supervise this program, and doctorial candidates and other support personnel also work closely with the children.
