Civil Rights Day 2009

in collaboration with the Office of Multicultural and International Student Programs 

Hofstra's Center for Civic Engagement will present a series of events on February 2nd to acknowledge the 49th anniversary of the Greensboro, North Carolina, lunch counter sit-ins, which began on February 1, 1960. The day's events will feature a series of dialogues focusing on both the history and the modernity of the struggle for equality and civil rights with a live jazz concert in the evening.

The Center for Civic Engagement was formed to encourage students to become active citizens and participate in the democratic process. The Center stresses freedom of speech and expression, respect for others, appreciation for diverse persons and viewpoints, the ethics of public issues, personal and group empowerment, social and economic equality, and preservation of the environment.

The vision of the Office of Multicultural & International Student Programs is to develop an inclusive, multicultural & globally aware campus that embraces and appreciates diversity within the Hofstra community.
