March 24 – 97th Anniversary Commemoration of the Triangle Factory Fire in Manhattan’s Greenwich Village. Speakers from the NYC Fire Dept. and UNITE/HERE remember the most deadly New York City industrial tragedy, in which 146 most immigrant youth died. April 1 – Paul Krugman, NY Times columnist and professor of economics at Prinseton University, discusses his new book, Conscience of a Liberal. At 2:20 pm in Monroe Lecture Hall, California Ave., Hofstra University. Free admission, seating limited, arrive early.
April 22 - "Equal Pay Day" - Speakers, films and other events will be held at Guthart Cultural Center Theater, Hofstra University, organized by the Hofstra Labor Studies Program, the Center for the Study of Labor and Democracy, the Women Studies Program, and Long Island Women on the Job to raise awareness about the continuing pay unfairness experienced by many women and people of color. It would take about 16 months (from the start of last year through April this year) for an average working woman to earn as much as a man earned in just the previous year. April 28 – “Workers Memorial Day.” April 28 is the anniversary of the founding of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. Every year since 1989, people in hundreds of communities, worksites and union halls in the U.S. and Canada recognize the many workers who have been killed or injured on the job.
