“Africans At Work” Film Series
February 14, 21, and 28, 2013.
The annual film series from the Labor Studies Program celebrates African American History Month by showcasing important documentaries on the rapidly changing lives and labor of working people and working-class movements in America and Africa. This year’s films are: “Slavery By Another Name” (2/14); “At The River I Stand” (2/21); & “The Dark Side of Chocolate” (2/28). “Hofstra Heart Health Week”
February 20–26, 2013.
Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. 90% of us have one or more risk factors. Each year, nearly 1 million Americans have heart attacks – and surprisingly many are young people. We can change this! Learn how and help others in a week of free activities, including: heart screenings; expert talks on stress management; a young cardiac arrest survivor’s stirring story; a blood drive; and a “Hoops for Hearts” basketball tournament. Organized by the Labor Studies Program.

What the Election Means for Our Jobs”
Hofstra’s Center for Study of Labor & Democracy presents this post-election conference featuring prominent speakers from government, labor, community groups and academia engaged in post-election discussion of the full implications of the Nov. 6th vote on the income and job prospects of working Americans. An historic Presidential election at a time of global economic crisis has reinvigorated and broadened public debate over the proper balance of the public and private sectors’ respective roles in the economy.
