Welcome to the Department of Global Studies and Geography. We opened our doors here in Roosevelt Hall in 2008 with about a dozen majors and minors; we now have almost 200! Peruse our web site to learn more about why we’re such a popular destination for majors within Hofstra College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
Students can pursue a BA in Global Studies and/or Geography (or a Pre-Med BA). If you’d like to study abroad, our Spring “European Odyssey,” provides the opportunity to earn a full semester of Global Studies and Geography credits while visiting 14 European countries.
Recently, a leading financial journal named Global Studies among the top 10 majors for “the new economy.” Geography also has become more sought after by employers with its desirability linked to both globalization and the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS). According to the Department of Labor, GIS is a “high growth industry,” with an estimated 10-year growth of over 330,000 geospatial professionals.
Our Department has just completed an exceptionally successful academic year. More than half of our graduating seniors earned Departmental honors, University honors, or Latin honors, while 80% of all social science students who graduated with Departmental Honors were Global Studies or Geography majors. For the second year running, one of our majors won Hofstra’s prestigious Undergraduate Library Research Award and in March, six of our majors presented their research at the 10th Colonial Academic Alliance Conference in Virginia. It is thus no surprise that we continue to attract among the most gifted students at Hofstra, with roughly one in ten of the May Honors College graduates’ being a major in our Department.
After visiting here, check out our student-run Facebook site, where you’ll find internship opportunities, news, and student and alumni discussions. We’re willing to help students tailor a program of study that’s right for them and help shape a rewarding post-Hofstra career in our increasingly global future. Please feel free to contact any member of our Department for further information.
