The Call of the Lark: A Talk by Maura Mulligan

Time/Location: 11:15am-12:40pm, Helene Fortunoff Theater, Monroe Lecture Center, south campus, California Avenue (public parking in back)

Description: The author discusses her memoir chronicling life in rural Ireland in the 1940s and 1950s, the challenges of emigration to the United States, and the pursuit of a fulfilling life. Book signings and sales to follow the talk.

Event: Belfast: A 'Post-Conflict' Conundrum: A Talk by Dr. Pete Shirlow

Time/Location: 6pm-8pm, Cultural Center Theater, south campus, (directly across from the entrance to Axinn Library)

Description: Queen’s University Belfast Professor and political geographer Pete Shirlow will present findings from a major study funded by the National Institute of Health on segregated communities in Belfast and the impact of previous and contemporary forms of sectarian violence.

Event: Irish Emigrants Lost at Sea: Presentations by Catherine Shannon and Arthur Mattson

Time/Location: 11:15am-12:40pm, Room 143 of the Student Center (park on the north side of campus, walk into the Student Center, make an immediate right and then the next right)

Description: In their presentations, the speakers offer contemporary accounts of three tragedies and trace the histories of their commemorations. Ms. Shannon is Professor Emerita of History at Westfield State College. Mr. Mattson is a local Long Island historian.

Event: Celebrating the Irish Writer

Time/Location: 11:15am-12:40pm, Main Floor of Axinn Library, 1st Floor, South Campus

Description: Warm up for St. Patrick’s Day by joining us and reciting a short snippet from your favorite reading by an Irish author or with a Irish-related theme. Co-sponsored with Library and Information Services.

Event: Reel Ireland Film Series: In America

Time/Location: 6-8pm, Helene Fortunoff Theater, Monroe Lecture Center, south campus,
California Avenue (public parking in back)

Description: Nominated for three Academy Awards. Directed by Jim Sheridan and co-written with his daughters. This semi-autobiographical film explores the mixture of hope and despair associated with emigration. Discussion to be facilitated by Professor Maggie Burke.

Event: Ireland Since Vatican II—A Talk by Dr. Margaret MacCurtain  

Time/Location:11:10am-12:35pm, Cultural Center Theater, south campus, directly across from the entrance to Axinn Library

Description: Margaret MacCurtain is Senior Lecturer Emerita in the Irish History Department of University College Dublin and Professor at the School of Irish Studies, Dublin. A former member of the Academic Council of the Irish School of Ecumenics, she served on the Catholic Communications Council set up by the Catholic hierarchy after Vatican Two.
