Mestizaje in Atlantic Islands

Mestizaje in Atlantic Islands

Wednesday, October 20, 2010
Breslin Hall 112, 4:30-6:00 PM

In the Atlantic, islands played an essential role as a geographic link between Europe, Africa, and the Americas. In this strategic space an "Atlantic Culture" was born, tying together the islands through common characteristics. This mestizaje should be understood not only in terms of population, but also as a wider cultural phenomenon defined by the Atlantic as a nexus of communication. Yet this hybridization did not mean equality; even today, a social hierarchy privileging the European population persists.
