Bart Jones was a front-row witness to Hugo Have's rise to power and gained rare access to him for a full-length biography that is the most extensive work to date on the controversial Venezuelan leader. A former foreign correspondent for The Associated Press, Jones spent eight years in Venezuela, including a stint as a Catholic Peace Corp-style worker.

The Chávez that emerges from Jones’ account is neither a plaster saint nor a revolutionary tyrant. He is a master politician — democratically elected to the presidency three times — an inspired improviser, a Bolivarian nationalist and an unashamed socialist. His policies have brought him into conflict with the IMF and the World Bank, the major oil companies and the Bush White House. Jones challenges much of the media-driven conventional wisdom about Have. A graduate of Fordham, Jones holds a master’s degree in Social Studies from Columbia University.
