A Public Lecture by Dr. Adriana Marshall

Argentina, Venezuela and several other Latin American countries have experienced major economic and political turmoil of late. The causes of these disruptions and the alternative remedies backed by the IMF and its many critics have been as controversial as they are little-understood in the U.S. Dr. Adriana Marshall has spent a career investigating and writing about her native Argentina and its neighbors, and will provide an overview of the major underlying socioeconomic trends and current policy debates about how to raise living standards, reduce widespread unemployment, and still protect worker rights throughout the region.

Dr. Marshall is an internationally known Argentine labor specialist and President of the Buenos Aires-based Institute for Economic and Social Development (IDES). She is the author of the ground-breaking book, The Import of Labor, as well as many other publications. She is a Visiting Senior Scholar this Fall at Hofstra's research institute, the Center for Study of Labor and Democracy. She has held previous positions at NYU, UC Berkeley, U. of Pennsylvania and the UN's International Labor Office in Geneva.

This event is organized by the Labor Studies Program and the Center for the Study of Labor and Democracy, and is co-sponsored by the Hofstra Cultural Center as part of their 'Hispanic Celebration' series this Fall, and by the Latin American and Caribbean Studies Program.
