About the Department

Hofstra's Department of Mathematics provides a comprehensive program that promotes excellence in undergraduate mathematics. The Department offers the following degrees: B.A. and B.S. in Mathematics, and a B.S. in Mathematics and Computer Science. The bachelor of arts and bachelor of science programs may include an emphasis in one or more specializations, such as applied mathematics, computer science, actuarial science, engineering, physics or chemistry.

Our dedicated faculty, all of whom hold doctoral degrees, are active in many fields of mathematical research and scholarship. Students are taught in small classes and seminars. Those who are interested in teaching mathematics at the elementary or secondary school level may enroll in a structured bachelor of arts program that culminates in provisional teaching certification.

The Department offers designated honors courses through Hofstra's Honors College, as well as the opportunity for students to work on senior honors theses with faculty members. Math majors with high grades can become members of the Pi Mu Epsilon Mathematical Honor Society or enter competitions such as the William Lowell Putnam Competition. There are also opportunities for scholarship awards. For those interested in actuarial work, the Department provides courses approved for Validation by Education Experience (VEE) by the Society of Actuaries in applied statistical methods, corporate finance and economics. In addition, we host the Al Kalfus Long Island Math Fair, and mentor many high school students for mathematics research projects.

Hofstra's mathematics majors have used their analytical skills to pursue careers in education, industry, finance, law, medicine and actuarial science. Many of our students are interested in teaching and work toward permanent certification. Our program is certified by the Teacher Education Accreditation Council (TEAC). Other students pursue graduate programs in fields such as business and statistics.

The Department provides three quality labs: a mathematics teaching lab, equipped with 20 PC computers; a scientific computing lab equipped with PC and Apple computers; and a tutoring lab, which is open five days a week. All three labs are located in Adams Hall.
