Dept. of Music Announces Spring 2013 Concert Schedule

For more information on the performances below, call the Music Department at 516-463-5490 or the Hofstra John Cranford Adams Playhouse Box Office at 516-463-6644, Monday through Friday, 11 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. Members of the Hofstra community may receive one free ticket to each concert upon presentation of a current HofstraCard.

Hofstra Opera Theater presents Princess Ida by Gilbert & Sullivan

Sunday, February 17, 3 p.m.
Black History Month Concert
“Black Spirit and the Struggle for Freedom” featuring the Hofstra Chamber Singers, Jazz Ensemble and Orchestra, Hofstra student dancers, invited choral ensembles from Hempstead High School and Uniondale High School and internationally-acclaimed soloists Diana Solomon-Glover, Robert Mack and Sidney Outlaw. Hofstra student actors will guide the audience through a semi-historical narrative highlighting important milestones in Black culture and the struggle for freedom in the United States and the world. The audience will hear re-enactments of Marian Anderson’s famous 1939 concert on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, tenor Roland Hayes’s controversial recital debut in Germany, Billie Holiday’s courageous performance of “Strange Fruit” and Nelson Mandela’s address to a crowd of thousands in Cape Town, South Africa following his release from prison in February, 1990. Choreographer Mickey Davidson will tie the concert together with dances from the Ragtime and Swing to South African boot dance.

Sunday, March 3, 3 p.m.
Hofstra String Quartet
The Hofstra String Quartet performs Dmitri Shostakovich’s lyrical String Quartet in G major, opus 101, and Felix Mendelssohn’s powerful and impassioned String Quartet No. 6 in F minor, opus 80.
Location: The Helene Fortunoff Theater, Monroe Lecture Center, California Avenue, South Campus

The Hofstra Collegium Musicum

“Star-crossed Lovers” with guest artist Christopher Morrongiello, lute.

American Chamber Ensemble

The American Chamber Ensemble performs works by Bohuslav Martinu, Gabriel Fauré, and Ernst von Dohnány.

Hofstra Jazz Ensemble

An evening of traditional and contemporary Jazz arrangements for Big Band and Little Big Band.
Location:  The Helene Fortunoff Theater, Monroe Lecture Center, California Avenue, South Campus
Tickets: $6 general admission, $5 senior citizens (over 65) and non-Hofstra students with ID. Members of the Hofstra community receive one free ticket upon presentation of a current HofstraCard. Tickets on sale beginning March 19.

Hofstra Chorale and Chamber Choir*

An eclectic selection of choral music presented in an exquisite acoustic space.
