Department of Music Spring 2011 Concert Schedule
February 13 at 3 p.m.: Hofstra String Quartet, presented by the Department of Music
The Hofstra String Quartet is a professional music ensemble in residence at Hofstra. This concert features works by Purcell, Haydn and Schubert.
Location: The Helene Fortunoff Theater, Monroe Lecture Center, California Avenue, South Campus
Tickets: $15 general admission, $12 senior citizen (over 65) or matriculated non-Hofstra student with ID. Members of the Hofstra community may receive a free ticket upon presentation of a current HofstraCard.
March 12 and 19: The Hofstra Shakespeare Festival Musicale and Companion Play
Join the Hofstra Collegium Musicum, directed by William E. Hettrick, for a concert of early music titled "These Mortals Be." The program also includes a one-hour adaptation of A Midsummer Night's Dream, adapted by Maureen Connolly McFeely and directed by Jean Dobie Giebel, titled What Fools! In this adaptation of Shakespeare's rollicking romantic comedy, lunatics, lovers and would-be poets escape to the woods and are transformed by moonlight and magic.
Dates/Times: Saturday, March 12 and 19, 2 p.m. There will also be a special performance of What Fools! on Thursday, March 17, at 8 p.m.

Tickets: On March 12 and 19 tickets are $11; $8 senior citizen (over 65) or matriculated non-Hofstra student with ID. Members of the Hofstra community may receive up to two free tickets upon presentation of a current HofstraCard. On March 17 tickets for the special performance of What Fools! are priced at $6 and discounts for members of the Hofstra community apply.
March 27: The Legacy of Harvey Phillips
Hofstra’s Tuba and Euphonium Instructor, Professor Michael Salzman, will present a Lecture/Recital on the teachings of Harvey Phillips. Harvey Phillips was a master teacher and certainly the most important figure in the history of his instrument, the tuba. Professor Salzman will offer some insight into his 35 year relationship with one of the most important instrumentalists of our time. Performances will include works which represent important aspects of Mr. Phillips’ teaching and philosophy by composers Bach, Wilder, Persichetti, Sondheim and the premiere of “Home Again” by Thomas Davis.

April 10 at 7 p.m.: Hofstra Jazz Ensemble. Presented by the Department of Music. Directed by David Lalama.
An evening of traditional and contemporary Jazz compositions and arrangements for Big Band and Nonet.
Location: The Helene Fortunoff Theater, Monroe Lecture Center, California Avenue, South Campus
Tickets: $6 general admission, $5 senior citizen (over 65) or matriculated non-Hofstra student with ID.

April 30 (7:15 p.m. lecture; 8 p.m. concert)Hofstra Symphony Orchestra presented by the Department of Music. Directed by David Ramael.
The Hofstra Symphony Orchestra welcomes renowned Belgian violinist Hans Van Kerckhoven, who will be performing Ottorino Respighi's Concerto Gregoriano. Also part of the program is Tchaikovsky's marvelous
Fifth Symphony in E minor.

A program of traditional and contemporary works for wind band.

A program of secular and liturgical choral works and traditional chamber music.
