  • B.S. Specialization in Physician Assistant Studies

The Hofstra University Physician Assistant Studies Program consists of a twenty-four month liberal arts and science foundation (termed the pre-professional or pre-requisite phase) followed by a twenty-seven month professional phase. The professional phase is further divided into a four semester didactic (classroom) phase and three semesters of full-time clinical rotation experience. Students follow a defined curriculum and take courses in Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Psychology, Sociology, English Composition, Humanities, Mathematics and Computer Sciences before they are eligible to apply to the professional phase. Completion of a course in clinical fieldwork or appropriate volunteer experience is also required in which students gain exposure to the healthcare environment. There is no guarantee of acceptance to the professional phase, although students attending the pre-professional phase at Hofstra University have preferred admission. This "preferred" status means that the first twenty seats of each thirty-student class may be held for Hofstra University students with completed, acceptable applications. Hofstra University students are defined as those students that are or have been fully matriculated for at least one semester at Hofstra University.

Upon acceptance to the professional phase, students progress from basic science courses to clinically focused courses to clinical rotations. Real-life clinical observations, patient case examples and hands-on practical sessions (such as suturing or casting) are utilized in the classroom. Technical procedures are demonstrated and practiced on models in small group settings. Students start interviewing real patients to obtain medical histories as early as the first semester of the didactic year. Upon successful completion of the four-semester didactic phase students progress to the clinical year, consisting of nine separate five-week clinical clerkships at various healthcare facilities located in the metropolitan New York / Long Island region.

Students completing the twenty-four month pre-professional phase and the twenty-seven month professional phase will receive both a Bachelor of Science in Physician Assistant Studies and a Certificate of Completion. Students who already hold a bachelor's degree will receive a Certificate of Completion, which will permit them to sit for the Physician Assistant National certification examination.
