Facilities

The Department is located in the new Berliner Hall, which opened June 1999. Berliner Hall contains the following Departmental facilities:

The Hofstra Observatory (Profs. Bochner and Hastings) partially supported by a grant from the National Science Foundation, includes Celestron telescopes and computerized CCD cameras. The Observatory is located on the roof of the Chemistry and Physics Building.

The Laser Laboratory (Prof. Garuthara), used for faculty research and student projects.

Teaching Laboratories and the Advanced Physics Laboratory (Prof. Edwards); used for classes and student and faculty projects.

A small Computer Laboratory (Prof. Hastings and Prof. Rodney Finzel, Chairperson, Department of Chemistry), partially supported by a grant from the National Science Foundation, used for undergraduate instruction. Additional computing resources for students and faculty research are located in the Chemistry and Physics Building and elsewhere on campus.

The Center of Arrhythmia Research (Dr. Steven J. Evans), supported by industrial and foundation grants, studies the physics of normal and abnormal hearts.

The Center of Condensed Matter Research (Dr. Harold Hastings), support ongoing work at Hofstra on practical applications of physics such as photocells, more powerful computers, physics of the heart and various types of networks.
