The Thatcher Years: The Rebirth of Liberty?

Margaret Thatcher, the longest-serving British Prime Minister of the 20th century and the first woman to hold that office, was a guest to the Hofstra University campus, March 27-28, 2000. She was the subject of a Hofstra Cultural Center conference, co-directed by HCLAS Dean Bernard J. Firestone and Professor of History Stanislao Pugliese. During her visit to Hofstra, Lady Thatcher received an honorary degree from the University and also met privately with Hofstra students to speak about her life, her political career and to answer questions.

Scholars, journalists and political practitioners came to Hofstra from all over the world to engage in this examination of Margaret Thatcher’s 12 years in office, her distinctive style and personality. The event was balanced to focus not only on Lady Thatcher’s achievements, but also the bitter conflicts associated with her leadership.
