Event: Dr. Joanna Brooks
September 27, 2012
On September 27, Dr. Joanna Brooks--San Diego State University professor and nationally recognized religion writer, blogger, Tweeter and commentator--spoke to a full house in the Cultural Center Theater. Known for explaining Mormonism to non-Mormons and advocating Mormon reforms to fellow Mormons, Brooks ranged on topics from the history of the LDS church to Mitt Romney's reticence about his faith, from her work on opposition to Proposition 8 in California to her experience marrying outside the faith. The enlightening, funny, and moving talk prompted a long and lively question-and-answer session. Brooks stayed to sign copies of her new memoir, "The Book of Mormon Girl," and to encourage other young writers. All in all, it was an unusual and fascinating angle on "faith in American politics"--a great warm-up for the Presidential Debate at Hofstra on October 16.
