LIT 038- Literature & Archaeology of the Roman Countryside

Part one takes place at Hofstra (May 20 - June 3), where students will learn about the history of Roman Italy, from the archaic to the Augustan periods, with reading and discussion of Roman historians, philosophers, and poets in English translation. The focus will be on the Roman countryside and the Roman villa as cultural symbols and sites for the development and transformation of Roman identity.

Part two will be intensive archaeological fieldwork in Tuscany (June 5 - June 14), where students will take part in the excavation of a Roman villa at Poggio del Molino, near the ancient Etruscan city of Populonia, while being introduced to archaeological theory and methodology. Excursions will take students also to several medieval towns and archeological parks of the area, as well as to the island of Elba
