At Hofstra University's College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (HCLAS), you can explore and discover new talents while preparing for a wide range of career options. Outside the classroom, there are hundreds of special events – lectures, seminars, conferences, performances, concerts and exhibits – that provide depth, context and new perspective about what you are learning in class.  Students are often actively involved in planning, managing and producing these events, providing wonderful opportunities to hone leadership skills.

Students in the natural and social sciences benefit from technologically advanced facilities and field study programs ranging from an archeological dig at an 18th century slave quarter to analysis of rock samples from Ground Zero.  Professors are committed to finding research opportunities on which they can collaborate with students.

Presidential debates, which Hofstra had the honor of hosting in 2008 and 2012, put students in the coveted position of being at the center of history-making events, including attending national political conventions and meeting internationally renowned journalists, political leaders and historians.  You will have access to the resources of several academic centers such as the Peter S. Kalikow Center for the Study of the American Presidency, the Center for Condensed Matter Research, the Center of Climate Study and the Center for Civic Engagement – that produce original research and scholarship in these specialized areas of study.

Students in the arts and humanities have an incredible variety of stages where they can explore and enhance their talents. Examples include the annual Shakespeare Festival; the student gallery in the Fine Arts and Art History Department; the English Department's "Great Writers, Great Readings" series and the Music Department's busy concert and recital schedule, which gives students the chance to perform with more than 20 large and small resident music ensembles.
