Why New College?
New College is small by design
- Small classes
- Enriched advisement
- Close-knit student community.
An Innovative Curriculum:
- Block Courses, in which students take one course at a time, for 3 ½ weeks, for a total of eight courses*
- Links to New York City: Block courses are tied into site visits and events in the New York City area: for example, performances on and off-Broadway, museums, concerts, field trips, or a visit to the New York Stock Exchange.
* Block courses are open to first-year students and sophomores enrolled in any College or School within the University. Students may take block courses for a semester or one academic year, and can apply credits earned in block courses toward satisfying the University's English composition or distribution requirements.
Individualized and Interdisciplinary Bachelor of Arts Programs:
- After your first year at New College, you go on the regular undergraduate schedule, which enables you to choose from a wide variety of courses offered through New College and the other schools of the University.
- In consultation with your adviser, you choose two distinct but related academic areas that interest you the most. Examples of the many possible interdisciplinary concentrations that can be pursued in New College include:
- Creative Writing and Psychology
- Ancient Literature and Philosophy
- Sociology and Art
- Film and Drama
- History and Environmental Science
Experiential Learning
- All New College degrees recognize the value of experience accrued outside the Hofstra classroom. Therefore, all New College concentrations require supervised internships and/or study abroad through accredited programs.
Preparation for the Future
- New College fosters lifelong learning through:
- Writing across the curriculum
- Emphasizing oral communication
- Fostering critical thinking
- Developing research skills
- Independent projects
