B.A. Degrees

At New College, you'll embark on a degree program that is tailored to your specific interests and career objectives. You'll choose a Bachelor of Arts degree program in one of four areas of study:

  • Humanities
  • Social Sciences
  • Natural Sciences
  • Creative Arts

Whereas most other degrees offered at the University ask students to take a substantial number of required courses in one discipline for their major, the degree program at New College is flexible, individualized, and interdisciplinary.

In close consultation with an adviser, you'll earn your B.A. degree at New College by combining two distinct but related areas of study into a concentration. For example, you might wish to combine economics and history, English literature and political science, or molecular biology and business.

Each of these four B. A. degree specializations requires the successful completion of at least 124 semester hours (s.h.) and a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 in work completed at Hofstra. In addition to the general B.A. degree requirements, each of these specializations requires students, in consultation with an adviser, to design a concentration in two related subject areas, as noted above. The concentration consists of 38 semester hours, the Capstone Seminar (4 s.h.), and the Senior Project (4 s.h.). Over the course of study, students compile a portfolio of their work that they can show to professional schools or prospective employers.
