New College Domestic Off-Campus Education
The domestic Off-Campus Education (OCE) program at New College offers Hofstra students the opportunity to participate in internships for academic credit. Designed to combine learning in the classroom with work experience, OCE has been a meaningful and enlightening educational experience for many Hofstra students since its inception in 1970. Through the Department of Political Science, the OCE Domestic program offers students internships in The Washington Semester Program, The New York State Assembly Session Internship, and other related internships.
Students who wish to participate in OCE programs must submit detailed proposals in the semester prior to the start of an internship. Written in consultation with the appropriate adviser, the proposal must make clear the student's objectives and qualifications for the internship. The proposal must also indicate that there is a sound educational relationship between the intended internship and the student's degree plan.
Examples of recent OCE internships include:
Betsy Johnson, where students worked in fashion design headquarters, and assisted with fashion shows, merchandising, and clothing buyers.
Madison Square Garden, where students worked in the PR office, assembled press kits and helped with promotional events.
NBC, where students worked as interns on "Saturday Night Live," and assisted with daily operations and Saturday night performances.
SONY/BMG Records, where a student worked as an assistant in accounts receivable, and helped with various newly signed bands and press kits.
"The Tony Danza Show," where students worked as assistant stage managers.
News Channel 12, where a student worked in the newsroom on journalism projects.
With the permission of their major adviser, students may be eligible for internships or courses at Disney College.
Writing requirements are subject to New College guidelines or those established by the appropriate adviser. A New College or Hofstra faculty member holds meetings and maintains contact with each student involved in the OCE program.
