J-DIV

From the Director

Dear Applicant/Guardian:

We are delighted that you are interested in participating in the inaugural J-DIV Summer Workshop at Hofstra University. Offered at no cost to the selected students, this program in working journalism will run from July 6 through July 17, Monday through Friday, 10 am to 4 pm. Participants will be paid a stipend upon completion of their stories.

J-DIV brings together students from diverse social and ethnic backgrounds to teach them journalistic methods to examine the world around them and to communicate the results through print and online media. Each participant will be paired with another to work as a reporting team. This aspect of the program will help participants learn different points of view about the communities they live in and the lives they lead. These collaborations will result in both solidly reported stories and firm friendships.

Participants will attend reporting, writing and Internet production workshops. They will learn how to gather information, how to conduct interviews, how to record, edit and upload their stories using the latest equipment in state of the art facilities. Faculty and student mentors from Hofstra University will assist them. The completed work will be put online and presented at a community roundtable.

Our objective is to teach students how to look at the world around them with an open mind and a curious eye, and—for some—to begin along the path that will make them full-fledged journalists.

Please remember that space in the program is limited, and that we seek a broad representation of students. Kindly complete the application form (link here) and mail or fax it by June 12. Finalists will be contacted for an interview soon after
