Experiential Learning

The main hub for all School of Communication (SOC) students is Dempster Hall, which consist of a number of facilities that enables students to create and view work that will prepare them for the employment challenges ahead.

The NewsHub is where students from all disciplines can work and collaborate in an industry-leading converged setting.  Journalism and radio students have the tools they need to write and produce newscasts for WRHU. For those working on The Long Island Report, there's an editor on duty – a journalism student doing an in-house-internship – most of the day to organize stories, parcel out flip cams and digital recorders to reporters, while also making sure the community news coverage is fresh and accurate. All of the online journalism classes are taught in the NewsHub.

WRHU's studios are unparalleled in the college setting, and indeed would rival many radio stations. Cutting edge computer software gives students a real feel for how stations are programmed. Live sports broadcasts, including those of the New York Islanders, concerts, wall-to-wall news coverage on election night, and in-studio interviews with celebrities and newsmakers put WRHU's programming in a very professional category.

Students who are studying all aspects of a degree in print journalism have a special computer lab in Dempster solely for them.  Graphic design and information media technology programs are at students' fingertips in this room where they also take classes in copy and editing and feature writing. Much of what goes into the student produces Pulse Magazine is created here.

Now that the internet is both a rival and complementary platform to all other media, much of what students create can now be archived online at HTVi – Hofstra Television interactive. Short form, original content is also showcased at htvinteractive.com, a completely student-run, online television station.
