Internship Program - Letter from the Chair

In the Department of Journalism, Media Studies, and Public Relations, we view internships as so important that we require students in both of our pre-professional programs to take at least one – if not more. Classes in the school concentrate on both the theory and practice of the various aspects of media production and promotion, but the internship is where students get to see how it all functions in the workplace. And since there isn’t just one model, we encourage our students to take more than one internship at more than one company or media outlet.

Our students frequently take advantage of the proximity of New York City to intern at ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC …as well as the various TV and radio stations in the city. Of course, New York City is the center for public relations as well, and our students intern at the top agencies in PR, such as Rubenstein Associates, Fleishman-Hillard, Hill & Knowlton and others. PR students also intern at national, non-profit associations, with politicians, magazine conglomerates, such as Hearst and Condé Nast, major sports teams and multi-national corporations. Our students who concentrate in print intern at some of the top newspapers in the country … and all over the country. Of course, New York is also the center of the magazine publishing world, so students interested in magazines tend to focus on the city. Those who want to stay closer to campus frequently intern at Newsday and other papers on Long Island – along with News12 Long Island and the area’s radio stations and public relations agencies. Many of our students are from outside the area and want to intern wherever home is. We can help there, too, with contacts for internships across the country and even elsewhere in the world.

We especially encourage those internships late in the college experience because so many lead directly to jobs, job connections and contacts they can use throughout their careers. In fact, part of how our students are able to get so many internships at prominent media outlets is because so many of our graduates already work there.

Sincerely,
Professor Bob Papper
