Journalism students get inside look at health care
Hofstra Graduate Journalism students enrolled in the Science and Medical Writing course with Assistant Adjunct Professor Scott Brinton met April 9, 2010 with officials from Long Beach Medical Center (LBMC) to discuss the future of medicine following the recent passage of President Obama’s historic health-reform legislation.
Among the speakers in the three-hour, small-group session were LMBC’s Chief Executive Officer Douglas Melzer, Chief Financial Officer Barry Stern, Assistant Administrator Cheryl Chapman, Director of Graduate Medical Education Dr. Cheryl Carrao, Public Relations Director Sharon Player.
This experience gave students a new perspective on the inner workings of a major medical center, as well as the challenges that hospitals will face in the coming years. Students also learned about best practices when approaching hospital officials for stories.
