Student and Alumni Activities
The Department of Curriculum and Teaching provides networking activities for alumni and degree candidates in secondary education, and elementary and early childhood education. Networking takes place through conferences, meetings and the Internet.
The Hofstra New Teachers Network (NTN) for Secondary School Teachers is a School of Education and Allied Human Services alumni group that builds on trusting relationships developed between teachers and university faculty during the secondary education pre-service teacher education programs. These relationships are maintained through the following practices:
- Hofstra faculty visits to secondary school classrooms.
- Practicing secondary school teachers host participant/observer degree candidates from the University.
- Practicing secondary school teachers participate in Hofstra classes.
- Experienced teachers serve as peer mentors of new teachers.
- Regularly scheduled support meetings.
- E-mail contact.
- Involvement in professional activities that include joint presentations at professional conferences.
The network offers new teachers the opportunity to be part of a supportive community where teachers are resources and partners rather than employees, clients, or students. Although the Internet connections are important, and allow for broad and continuous participation and reflection by new teachers, the key to the network are the large and small gatherings.
Bi-monthly NTN meetings take place on Saturdays at the University and regularly attract between 20 and 40 participants. A December conference where teachers discuss curriculum and a Spring conference that explores classroom practice usually draw between 150 and 200 Hofstra alumni and their colleagues. The Hofstra Network of Elementary Teachers (HNET) is a professional community for elementary teachers and teachers-to-be associated with the Department of Curriculum and Teaching of the Hofstra School of Education and Allied Human Services. You are welcome if you work with a colleague who is a Hofstra alum, have had a Hofstra participant-observer or student teacher, or supervised a Hofstra student.
HNET allows us to support each other professionally in the following ways:
- Personal interactions
- Internet connections
- Conferences
The Web site is a forum on which you can:
- Respond to other teachers.
- Share great curriculum, materials, and teaching ideas.
- Obtain job search information.
- Find out about past and future conferences.

The Hofstra Early Childhood Conference has been an annual event for the past two decades. It is a network for recent alumni and professional teachers to meet, learn together, and discuss curriculum issues in early childhood education. Participants receive a newsletter, Long Island Kindergarten Educators. New teachers receive scholarships. Alumni focus groups provide the Department of Curriculum and Teaching with feedback about University programs. Alumni Internet networks provide a supportive community for new teachers. Participants also offer suggestions for future topics. It is typical for 150-350 participants to brave the first Friday of February each year when the conference is held. Kappa Delta Pi is the education honorary society for highly accomplished degree candidates. The Hofstra chapter meets on a regular basis to provide stimulating programs that deal with contemporary issues in education. Association of Supervision and Curriculum Development Student Chapter is a forum for degree candidates to engage in the activities of a professional association. Degree candidates collaborate in planning exciting programs and networking events that support their professional goals through a community of teaching interests.
