Advanced Certificate Program
in Gifted Education
Distance Learning
The advanced certificate program for teaching students of high ability/talents is designed for teachers who hold New York State teacher certification or for students completing an education master's program who seek a concentration in gifted education: 12 s.h. This program leads to the New York extension for gifted education for classroom teaching certificates.
The advanced certificate includes the following four courses:
- CAT 235 Creativity (3 s.h.)
- SPED 255 Introduction to Gifted Education (3 s.h.)
- SPED 256 Schoolwide Enrichment: Instructional Methods and Materials for all Learners (3 s.h.)
- SPED 258 Internship: Gifted/Talented Children (3 s.h.)
This four-course certificate program is offered fully online.
Admission Requirements
Admission to the Special Education Advanced Certificate Program in Gifted Education is based on a comprehensive review of multiple criteria, including the following:
- A master's degree in special education or New York State classroom teaching certification at the childhood, middle childhood, or adolescent developmental level.
- A completed application form to the advanced certificate program.
- A minimum grade point average of 3.0.
- Three letters of recommendation addressing the applicant's potential to succeed in the teaching of students with exceptional gifts and talents.
- A written personal statement of professional intent.
- Interview with a faculty member in special education.
The Department understands that any single criterion may not reliably predict a candidate's potential for success in a graduate program. Consequently, candidates are welcome to apply if they do not meet one of the criteria but feel that other aspects of their experience may compensate.
In addition to pedagogical studies, the Commissioner's Regulations requires that all school-based programs provide students with instructions for the purpose of:
- Identification of Child Abuse and Maltreatment
- Fire and Arson Prevention
- Prevention of Alcohol, Tobacco and Drug Abuse
- School Violence Prevention and Intervention (SAVE)
- Highway and School Safety/Prevention of Child Abduction
New York State legislation also requires all persons seeking certification as special education teachers or school administrators working in special education to have training in the areas of children with autism. All of these requirements must be completed before the conferral of the degree and recommendation for certification. Candidates for certification in New York state must also demonstrate satisfactory performance on the required State assessment.

To register via the Hofstra Online Information System, you must login through the My Hofstra Portal at My.Hofstra.edu. You must know your network ID, password and alternate PIN (if necessary). Once you have logged in using your Hofstra network ID and password, click on the Hofstra Online tab to access the Hofstra Online Information System. Once in the Hofstra Online system, click on the option titled "Registration" and follow the necessary links.
