What is an Athletic Trainer?

According to the Board of Certification (BOC) an athletic trainer is defined as a healthcare professional that collaborates with physicians to optimize activity and participation of patients and clients.  Athletic training encompasses the prevention, diagnosis and intervention of emergency, acute and chronic medical conditions involving impairment, functional limitations and disabilities.  Athletic Training is recognized by the American Medical Association (AMA) as a healthcare profession.

Athletic Trainers specialize in six (6) practice areas or domains:

  • Prevention
  • Clinical Evaluation and Diagnosis
  • Immediate Care
  • Treatment, Rehabilitation and Reconditioning
  • Organization and Administration
  • Professional Responsibilities

Students who become a certified athletic trainer will be entering one of the fastest growing professions according to the US Bureau of Labor StatisticsThe Athletic Training profession is expected to grow 37% by 2018.
