The Teaching of Writing (B-6) or (5-12)

These graduate programs and courses are offered by the Long Island, New York campus of Hofstra University.

This program provides teachers with the most current understandings of literacy, writing, and pedagogical practices while also earning certification as literacy teachers in Early Childhood and Childhood Education, Birth through Grade 6 or Middle Childhood and Adolescence, Grades 5-through 12. The faculty are experienced writers with extensive expertise in providing support for children and adolescents in composition, writing across content areas, and creative writing.

The M.A. in the Teaching of Writing engages active teachers in writing workshops and field work that focuses on observations, assessment, and instruction with B-12 writers. Many courses are offered during the summer and students are encouraged to participate in the Long Island Writing Project.

Writing (Birth-Grade 6) The Teaching of, M.A.

This program prepares students to meet the educational requirements for certification as literacy teachers in Early Childhood and Childhood Education, Birth through Grade 6. In addition to gaining expertise in literacy and writing, specialized courses focus on teaching reading and writing across the curriculum in early childhood and elementary classrooms, children's literature, language and literacy development, and assessment informed instruction for young readers and writers. Students may take additional coursework leading towards a Birth through Grade 12 certification.

Writing (Grades 5-12), The Teaching of, M.A.

This program prepares students to meet the educational requirements for certification as literacy teachers in Middle Childhood and Adolescence, Grade 5 through Grade 12. In addition to gaining expertise in literacy and writing, specialized courses in this program focus on teaching writing and reading in middle school and high school classrooms, adolescent literature, and reading and writing in content areas. Students may take additional coursework leading towards a Birth through Grade 12 certification.
