The MSED in Literacy Studies provides certified teachers with the opportunity to earn professional certification while at the same time gaining additional certification as literacy teachers in Early Childhood and Childhood Education, Birth through Grade 6 or Middle Childhood and Adolescence, Grades 5-through 12. Students may take additional coursework leading towards Birth to Grade 12 certification.
The MSED in Literacy Studies prepares teachers to support readers and writers experiencing difficulties with theoretically grounded understandings of reading and writing processes, children's and young adult literature, family and community literacy, language and literacy development, English language learners, and assessment and evaluation of reading and writing. Through field work and practicum experiences, teachers gain first hand expertise in assessing and documenting students' literacy development, providing individual literacy support for readers and writers, and communicating students' strengths and need with families and school personnel. Literacy studies faculty are experienced teachers and teacher educators with extensive expertise in providing literacy support for children and adolescents.
Graduates of the MSED in Literacy Studies are literacy specialists prepared to work collaboratively with classroom teachers in designing and implementing effective literacy instruction in inclusive environments. Literacy studies graduates are employed as classroom teachers with advanced preparation in literacy studies, literacy specialists providing individual and small group literacy support and literacy coaches and mentors. Our graduates are scholar practitioners who advocate for children and adolescents as learners in the economically, linguistically and ethnically diverse communities found in New York State.
This program prepares students to meet the educational requirements for certification as literacy teachers in Early Childhood and Childhood Education, Birth through Grade 6. In addition to gaining expertise in literacy studies, bilingual/ biliteracy, and assessment, specialized courses focus on teaching reading and writing across the curriculum in early childhood and elementary classrooms, children's literature, language and literacy development, and assessment informed instruction for young readers and writers. Faculty have a depth of experience as early childhood and elementary classroom teachers. Students may take additional coursework leading towards a Birth through Grade 12 certification.
This program prepares students to meet the educational requirements for certification as literacy teachers in Middle Childhood and Adolescence, Grade 5 through Grade 12. In addition to gaining expertise in literacy studies, bilingual/ biliteracy, and assessment, specialized courses in this program focus on teaching writing and reading in middle school and high school classrooms, adolescent literature, and reading and writing in content areas. Faculty have a depth of experience working with adolescent readers and writers. Students may take additional coursework leading towards a Birth through Grade 12 certification.
