M.A. in Elementary Ed.

Master of Arts

The Master's program in Elementary Education is offered by the Department of Teaching, Literacy, and Leadership. It is designed to provide advanced study in elementary school and instruction for those holding Initial Certification in Childhood Education or Early Childhood Education.

Hofstra's M.A. in Elementary Education offers three areas of specialization:

1. Specialization: Arts and the Humanities
   The program is designed for practicing teachers who wish to experience personal growth and development as well as explore new perspectives on teaching and learning as they engage in curriculum organization and revision in arts and the humanities.
2. Specialization: Curriculum Studies in Multicultural Communities
   The M.A. Program in Elementary Education with specialization in Curriculum Studies in Multicultural Communities will prepare elementary school teachers to work in urban communities and collaborate with parents, staff, teachers and community workers to create equitable educational environments. The core ideals of this program are community, democracy, development and achievement.
3. Specialization: Educational Technology
   Emerging technologies are providing new opportunities and options for teaching and learning at all levels. This specialization in education technology provides certified teachers with advanced study in the applications of educational technology within schools. The program includes a common core of courses that integrates information technologies with curriculum and instructional theory.

Admission Criteria

1. Completed baccalaureate degree
2. New York State initial teaching certification in Early childhood or Childhood education.
3. Undergraduate GPA of 2.75 of higher in all course work and in liberal arts and sciences coursework.
4. Two letters of reference addressing your potential to succeed in graduate work.
5. A written personal statement of professional purposes and commitment to elementary education.
6. Interview with the program coordinator

The department understands that any single criterion may not reliably predict a student's potential for success in the program. Students may consider applying even if they fail to meet one of the criteria but feel that other aspects of their experience might compensate.
