Mentoring and Coaching: The New Leadership Skill

The education reform movement sweeping across the United States has created the need for a cadre of teacher leaders who are trained in peer coaching and mentoring.  This cadre of teacher leaders will work within educational communities to improve the quality of instruction and pedagogy.  For example, the New York State Education Department requires districts to provide new teachers with a mentored experience.  Such participation facilitates the novice teacher’s transition from teacher preparation programs to their first professional appointment. The continued training and retention of those new to teaching is a key goal of the mentoring program.  Hofstra University’s Advanced Certificate program trains experienced teachers to become guides, advocates, reflective partners, and mentors capable of fulfilling the overall goals of mentoring and professional development programs.
