CSTEP Summer Academy for First Year and Transfer Students


The 3-week summer academy introduces first year and transfer students to careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics and the skills needed to succeed academically and professionally. The academy is administered on the campus of Hofstra University and online. It is divided into the following three phases: Phase 1 – Cyber Campus, Phase 2 - Hofstra University Campus and Phase 3 – Cyber Campus.

Phase 1: Cyber Campus


Phase 1 begins with an orientation on the campus of Hofstra University, where participants are introduced to the summer program, and meet staff and fellow participants. They are also paired with an upperclassman CSTEP Scholar mentor. Day two follows with assignments for home including resume and cover letter development, and creating a five-year plan. Participants maintain communication through email, telephone and Skype, where possible.

Phase 2: Hofstra University Campus

Students reside on the campus of Hofstra University during phase 2, and the program covers room and board. A host of workshops and activities are scheduled during phase 2 including:

  • Ice breakers to allow students to form a greater bond with one another
  • Counselor/mentor workshops

  • Teambuilding activities, such as a ropes course

  • Daily reflection on activities and events
  • Fieldtrips to locations including Brookhaven National Laboratory
  • Graduate school workshop
  • One-on-one meetings with staff and mentors 

  • Campus scavenger hunt

Phase 3: Cyber Campus

Students remain in contact through email, telephone and Skype during phase 3. Students continue to work on assignments from phase 2, and connect with a program counselor and mentor for feedback and reflection on lessons learned.
