Program Requirements: Prerequisites

Please see the "Course Descriptions" link at left for detailed descriptions of the courses mentioned below.

Prerequisites for students from another discipline of study:

1 15 undergraduate s.h.
bullet SPCH 5 Phonetics
bullet SPCH 6 Anatomy and Physiology (of the speech and hearing mechanism)
bullet SPCH 8 Introduction to Hearing Science or SPCH 103 Introduction to Speech Science
for audiology students
bullet SPCH 102 Language in Child Development
bullet SPCH 137 Introduction to Audiology


2 5 graduate s.h. (not applicable toward the M.A. degree) (summer only)
  bullet SPCH 235 Introduction to Speech-Language and Hearing Disorders (must be taken with SPCH 235L)
  bullet SPCH 235L Clinical Observation and Report Writing (must be taken with SPCH 235)


Please read carefully:


Admission to the graduate program is based on a variety of factors including overall GPA, GPA in Speech, Language, Hearing courses, GRE scores, academic letters of reference and personal statement.

1 Include, with your application, a cover letter to Hofstra's Director of Graduate Admissions.
2 In your cover letter list (by title and course number) prerequisite courses that are in progress
3 Explain in your cover letter that you would like the grades for those courses considered when your application is reviewed.

Upon completion of the prerequisite courses, request the registrar's office, in the institution at which you are fulfilling the prerequisite courses, to expedite sending an official transcript to the Hofstra Office of Graduate Admissions.
